Our Mission
Reimagining high-performance building through the lens of local resources, cooperative craftsmanship, and natural materials on the North Shore of Minnesota.
The Challenge
Expensive & Hard to Build
Housing on the North Shore is expensive and hard to build. Natural, high-performance homes have historically been custom-only and out of reach.
Carbon Footprint
Most construction materials have a huge carbon footprint.[1] We need building systems that sequester carbon instead of emitting it.
Builder Access
Local builders don't have access to natural building systems, and homeowners want better options but don't know where to start.

Our Vision
Creating a resilient, circular building economy in Cook County and beyond.
Attainable Housing
We are committed to developing housing solutions in Cook County that are thermally superior, beautiful, and within reach of the local workforce.
Carbon Sequestration
Our panels turn agricultural waste into long-term carbon sinks, locking away more CO₂ than is produced during the manufacturing process.[4]
Local Workforce
Source straw regionally, hire locally, serve the community. We grow real jobs on the North Shore as production scales.
Bankable & Insurable
Natural building only works if people can finance and insure it. We work with local lenders and insurance providers in Cook County to ensure straw panel homes meet their underwriting requirements - from code-compliant engineering to fire-rated assemblies and third-party inspection documentation.
Code Compliance - Panels engineered to IRC standards with stamped structural drawings for permit and lender review.
Fire-Rated Assemblies - ASTM E119 tested wall systems that satisfy insurance risk models.
Lender Relationships - We provide documentation packages and work directly with local institutions to streamline approval.
We work alongside homeowners, builders, engineers, and architects to help ensure homeowners can secure traditional financing for straw panel homes in Cook County.
Why Strawbale?
Fast Installation
At the Gunflint Trail project, we demonstrated that a high-performance shell can be raised in days, using pre-fabricated strawbale panels.
R-38 Insulation
Straw is an incredible natural insulator. Our panels provide an R-value of 38, drastically reducing heating and cooling costs in northern climates.[1]
Fire Resistance
Densely packed straw within a plaster or timber frame lacks the oxygen required for combustion, often exceeding the fire ratings of conventional stick-built walls.[2]
Healthy Environments
Vapor-permeable (breathable) walls prevent mold and improve indoor air quality, creating a living space free from off-gassing synthetic chemicals.[3]

Conventional Ease
While the materials are natural, the process is familiar.
Our panels are engineered to work with existing building trades. Service chases mean that plumbers and electricians can use standard tools and methods to run utilities, ensuring that building a Brightbale home doesn't require a specialized workforce beyond the shell.
